Types of scans offered Pregnancy confirmation scans

2nd trimester abnormality screening
Breast and thyroid scans
Venous and arterial scans
Abdominal sonars
|
| Early first trimester ultrasound scan

The best time to do this scan is around six to eight weeks. The main reasons for this scan is to:
> Confirm a pregnancy > Confirm whether the pregnancy is inside or outside (ectopic) the womb > Determine whether the pregnancy is single or multiple > Determine the presence of a fetus with a heartbeat > To accurately measure and determine the age of the pregnancy > To exclude any pelvic pathology such as ovarian cysts or fibroids
| |
| Nuchal translucency (NT) ultrasound scan
The
NT scan forms part of a screening programme for Down's Syndrome.
The thickness of the fluid behind the baby's neck is measured. The
measurment is taken between 11 and 14 weeks. Down's babies usually have
thicker nuchal translucencies. The NT measurement, combined with blood
tests and the mom's age, can calculate a risk for Down's Syndrome.

| Second trimester 2D ultrasound scan (Fetal anomaly scan)

The
fetal anomaly scan is performed between 18 and 23 weeks. The main
objective of this scan is to assess all the structural anatomy of the
baby.
The structures that should be examined include the following:
> Skull > Brain (Various structures) > Spine > Face > Eye sockets > Lens of the eye > Nose > Lips > Chin > Heart > Stomach > Abdominal wall
| > Kidneys > Bladder > Umbilical cord > Legs > Arms > Hands > Feet > Placenta > Amniotic fluid > Gender > Amniotic fluid |
| |
| Third trimester ultrasound scan
Third
trimester scans are usually performed to assess fetal growth and
wellbeing. Measurements, fetal weight, amniotic fluid, placental
position and fetal position can be assessed during this time. Sometimes
it is neccessary to measure the blood flow through the umbilical cord
to make sure the baby is not being comprmised.
